The armchair Louis is a faithful reproduction of an ornate and formal straight-backed armchair (1788), or fauteuil, crafted by Georges Jacob (French, 1739–1814), one of France’s most successful chair-makers of the 18th century. The Met’s chair is part of a larger set of furniture described in the 1789 inventory of Château de Saint Cloud on the outskirts of Paris. The set was commissioned for Louis XVI’s gaming room, known as the Salon des Jeux.
