HISTORIC PROVENANCE
The "Antonine" table lamp draws inspiration from a marble vase with handles in the form of intertwined snakes (2nd century CE) located at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Roman original, considered one of the best-preserved examples of this type, is decorated with distinctive, undulating "S"-shaped reliefs. The snakes, whose jaws appear to grip the rim of the vessel, symbolized the powers of the underworld and were considered by the Greeks and Romans to be guardians of sacred places and tombs.
