HISTORIC PROVENANCE
The "Mirror Chippendale" is inspired by a design by Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779) from circa 1753–1762, which is part of The Met's collection. In 1754, Chippendale published the first edition of his groundbreaking work, "The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director," containing 161 engravings depicting furniture in Gothic, Chinese, and Rococo styles, as well as a series of simpler domestic forms. Although the design for this mirror was not published in a book, it perfectly captures Chippendale's characteristic English Rococo aesthetic.
